Outlier
Outlier, modern craft set into the steep eastern slopes of Lake Tahoe, the Glenbrook residence unfolds as an orchestration between structure and landscape. The architecture weaves through the site, bending around ancient boulders and clusters of pines, allowing nature to dictate its rhythm at which it extrudes from the terrain. Each form feels both anchored and in motion, its modern lines softened by the craftsmanship of joinery and the tactility of wood and stone. The palette is restrained yet rich; monochromatic timber surfaces, gray stone, and blackened metal creating a seamless continuity between interior and exterior. Light filters through these materials like breath through the forest, revealing spaces that expand toward the lake and contract into intimacy along the slope. The result is a home that feels settled rather than imposed, an architecture of confidence, grounded in its setting and elevated by its restraint.
In Design
The entry and adjoining library mark the first moments of transition from landscape to interior, a threshold where warmth, light, and craft converge. Stone and wood interplay to create both texture and calm, grounding the modern form in tactile authenticity. Within the library, tall shelving and generous glazing heighten the sense of verticality, framing views of the surrounding pines like living artwork. Together, these spaces establish the home’s tone: refined yet welcoming, contemplative yet deeply connected to its mountain setting.
Along the lake’s edge, the terrace becomes an open extension of the home, where stone, glass, and air merge into a single gesture toward the water. The architecture thins here, its structure reduced to rhythm and shadow beneath the floating roofline. Spaces for cooking, dining, and gathering unfold in sequence, anchored by the warmth of the fire pit and the distant shimmer of the lake. It’s a place designed not only for view, but for pause, an outdoor room where the stillness of Tahoe settles into the architecture itself.
The living room and kitchen form the heart of the home, spaces defined by openness, warmth, and the quiet rhythm of repetition in wood, stone, and light. The living area gathers around a linear hearth, its textures shifting from the rough tactility of stone to the refined grain of oak above. In contrast, the kitchen offers a composition of precision: pale surfaces and dark accents balanced against the warmth of the cabinetry. Together, they create a seamless dialogue between craft and calm, where every line and material speaks to both modern restraint and mountain comfort.
The bedroom volumes balance intimacy and openness, each space quietly framed by warm wood tones and filtered light. Inside, built-in joinery defines both function and rhythm, with the bed nestled against a sculpted wall of cabinetry that conceals storage and soft illumination. Vertical slats lend texture and depth, subtly dividing the sleeping and dressing areas without breaking continuity. From the exterior, these rooms read as a stacked lantern on the hillside, glowing gently through the trees, private retreats that still remain part of the larger landscape.
